Empowering Minds Through Concept-Based Learning

Concept Based Approach

At IWAS, our educational approach emphasizes concept-based learning, where the focus is on overarching ideas rather than isolated subject matters. This methodology inspires students to think critically, deepen their understanding, and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. By exploring the context and real-world applications of their learning, students develop a stronger connection to the material and its relevance in their lives.

Our learning philosophy centers on a concept-driven approach. This approach prioritizes a deep understanding of overarching ideas rather than focusing solely on subject-specific details. By connecting learning to larger concepts, students develop critical thinking skills, apply knowledge meaningfully, and engage with their education in a more dynamic and impactful way.

For example, in mathematics, students go beyond rote memorization of facts. They explore how mathematical concepts connect to real-life applications and other areas of study, fostering a deeper understanding and the ability to think critically about how these ideas function in various contexts. This approach equips students with the tools they need to make sense of the world around them.

Approaches to Learning

At IWAS, Approaches to Learning (ATLs) are foundational skills that empower students for success in the 21st century. These skills include social, communication, self-management, research and critical thinking.

ATLs are integral to all three IB programmes, creating a shared language for students and teachers to reflect on and enhance the learning process. They equip students with the ability to “learn how to learn” through practice and deliberate teaching, fostering lifelong learning and personal growth.

Individualized Approach to Learning

At IWAS, we recognize each child as an individual with unique abilities, experiences, and interests. Our Primary Years Programme (PYP) ensures that learning is relevant and meaningful, regardless of a student’s background. Teachers adopt an inclusive approach to accommodate various learning styles and needs, nurturing a culture of respect and understanding in our diverse community.

Culture of Care and Well-being

Student well-being is at the core of our primary school culture. We create a supportive environment where students are encouraged to take ownership of their well-being and contribute positively to the school community. Through initiatives such as peer mentoring, mindfulness practices, and regular check-ins, we promote emotional intelligence and resilience, helping students manage emotions and build strong interpersonal skills.

Standards-Based Learning with an International Perspective

At IWAS, we align learning outcomes with age-appropriate global standards, ensuring a smooth transition should families relocate internationally. Core subjects such as Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies are taught by homeroom teachers, while specialist teachers guide students in Music, Visual Arts, Drama, Physical Education, and Modern Languages.

Multilingual and Cross-Cultural Learning

IWAS offers opportunities for multilingual learning, where students can engage with content in both their primary language and additional languages, fostering cross-cultural understanding and global-mindedness. Our multilingual approach allows students to immerse themselves in language learning and explore content more deeply, preparing them to communicate confidently in diverse settings.
